#30DaysOfThankful Day 2: True love

The Princess Bride cartoonWhat’s the matter? Getting grossed out by my #30DaysOfThankfulness? Yes, it’s going to get quite soppy, get used to it or go read something else ;)

What more can I say about true love? I’m thankful to finally know true love! The fact it was right there all along is very random, but I guess all good things take time.

I’m thankful that I have someone who knows me, thinks about meme, respects me, is kind to me, says nice things to me, is thoughtful, considerate, sweet and protective. Who laughs at my dad’s jokes and makes plenty of his own, and for some reason finds me funny most of the time. Who makes me feel safe and loves me as much as I love him. I’ll never take any of it for granted.

Thank you <3

P.S. Yes, that’s Russell I’m talking about ;)

#30DaysOfThankful Day 1: Jesus died for me

Llanddwyn Isle CrossIt’s the number one thing I’m thankful for and have been since I was old enough to realise it.  I’ve never not believed, and only rarely have I ever felt a slight wobble in my faith.

Who else could ever love me so completely?

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,f that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

“For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.” 1 Colossians 13-14

Nobody could ever love you or me so completely and I’ll give thanks daily until I’m in heaven too.

#30DaysOfGeek Day 30: Technology 20 years into the future

So we’re on the last day of the #30DaysOfGeek challenge.  It’s been qutie interesting. What have I learnt? Two things:

  1. I’m not actually nerdy at all really, slightly geeky but not nerdy
  2. I’m really used to Twitter and not used to writing long blog posts anymore – not unless I’m politically ranting or talking about games

Where do you see technology advancing in the next 20 years – and where will you fit in?

Where will it go?  SKYNET!  No, maybe not that far.  I’m in government, so it’s probably not going to go anywhere.  I’d be hoping for a future where people are more connected, knowledge is shared more freely, everything is more accessible, and people can prosper and be happy – technology just enabling where it needs to.

I’m not sure where I’ll fit in.  Hopefully it’ll have something to do with making sure people needs and business needs are what drives the development, not just technology for the hell of it.  So bring on the standards, quality and user focus. :)

I’m tired, so that’s all I’m going to say.  I’ve enjoyed the #30DaysOfGeek challenge!

Next up: #30DaysOfMusic ^_^ But maybe I won’t be doing it on Tumblr.  Although I do have my own Tumblr blog and one dedicated to old games.

#30DaysOfGeek Day 29: Looking back (at geek life), would you have done anything differently?

Oh My Lord, what a huge fecking question this is…

What would I have done differently?  I’m not on my fecken deathbed, so I have no clue what I would have done differently.

I think any changes would be career related.  Here are a few ideas:

  1. Not studied IT, actually done something bankable like nursing, medicine, builder etc.  A trade!
  2. Not wasted time learning programming, and stuck with project management plus analysis and design
  3. Become a project manager or stayed as a Business Analyst and not moved from technical into management

I think number 3 is probably the most important one.

#30DaysOfGeek Day 28: How many computers lying about the house?

White Apple MacBookHow many computers lying around the house?  I don’t really leave them lying!  What have we got though?

  • MacBook – he’s right here on the table
  • HP – he’s under some dude’s desk somewhere waiting for me to pick him up
  • Toshiba – in the closet keeping the shelf busy
  • Random old P3 – gathering dust in the garage

That’s all I have, 3 laptops.

#30DaysOfGeek Day 27: Fix a bug in some open source software and commit the patch

WTF?  Hahahahahahahahaha…. No, I can’t possibly.  Why not?  Because I have no idea how to do that.  That’s how fecken geeky I am.  Sorry ;)

What else can I do for you?  How about I link you to some comics?  Read yourself some Cyanide & Happiness, XKCD, CTRL+ALT+DEL or Penny Arcade.

How about something really random… The Daily WTF: Curious Perversions in Information Technology.

#30DaysOfGeek Day 26: Apple – friend, foe or other?

I don’t know what to say about this one.  Having worked for them I’ll tell you that they suck balls.

But I do love my iPhone and my iPod.  I really do.

But then again, I’m lucky enough to have lived in New Zealand and had nothing go wrong with them.  If you live here and something goes wrong – you’re fucked.  There are no Apple stores for you to visit.  You have to visit Magnum Mac or some other useless place and get charged!  Apple stores wouldn’t charge you!

So, foe.  But thanks for the iPhone fuckers!  No wait, not thank you, I paid for the damn thing!

#30DaysOfGeek Day 25: Microsoft – friend, foe or other?

Microsoft Windows XP Bliss backgroundOh, wow.  You have to even ask?  Everyone who knows me knows that I’m madly in love with Bill Gates.  Nothing will ever change that.

Oh Bill Gates, how I love thee, let me list the ways:

  • You’re so geeky, you are just so geeky <3
  • Your house is awesome
  • You’re just geeky as, and it’s hawt
  • Microsoft is awesome
  • *droooool*
  • He loves me, he loves me not, he loves me, he loves me not, he loves me
  • So geeky… *sigh*

#30DaysOfGeek Day 24: How do you feel about Open Source vs. Proprietary software?

Windows Open Source logoOpen source vs. proprietary software, how do I feel about it?

Firstly, let’s clarify that software includes games and commercial software.

I think both are good. Why would we want everything to be free? How would the economy work? We will have all our coders on welfare working on open source code! If you have a great product and you invest in it then why the hell shouldn’t you benefit from it?

Commercially it makes sense. You’ll find that most organisations need to have companies to hold accountable for support and problems with software.

Open source would work if there was someone supporting them too I guess.

Either way. We need to have competition and we need companies making money and paying tax. So both aregood and both are necessary.
