#30DaysOfGeek Day 24: How do you feel about Open Source vs. Proprietary software?

Windows Open Source logoOpen source vs. proprietary software, how do I feel about it?

Firstly, let’s clarify that software includes games and commercial software.

I think both are good. Why would we want everything to be free? How would the economy work? We will have all our coders on welfare working on open source code! If you have a great product and you invest in it then why the hell shouldn’t you benefit from it?

Commercially it makes sense. You’ll find that most organisations need to have companies to hold accountable for support and problems with software.

Open source would work if there was someone supporting them too I guess.

Either way. We need to have competition and we need companies making money and paying tax. So both aregood and both are necessary.

#30DaysOfGeek Day 21: Favouritest and worst things about working in IT

So my favouritest and worst things about working in IT?

Worst: Righteous hippies. There are lots of them in IT. And people who should know about the benefits of accessibility and standards and ignore them!

Favouritest: Hot geeky guys ;) Especially Russell!

Posted from WordPress iPhone app. Who knows how this is looking to you ;)

#30DaysOfGeek Day 20: Where do you stand on Internet Censorship?

Google and the great firewall of China (Source: http://dominicstoughton.wordpress.com)

I have no idea.  I’m not quite sure what you mean by this.  I think pron should be free for all and people should be able to say whatever the hell they want to.  Is this what you what the question means?  Or are we going to get into a conversation about Creative Commons?

I think giant firewalls blocking traffic to people are pointless, controlling and bullshit.  Then again, when you look at what happens offline – iruno.  I think what’s happened in Egypt was awesome, people fighting for their right to speak and making great use of social media.  They couldn’t shut them down!  :)

Australia needs to calm the fuck down and let people play Mortal Kombat.

#30DaysOfGeek Day 19: Most hated computing environment.

Most hated computing environment?

My house.  Or anywhere where there is no sun.  I prefer to sit outside in the sun with my laptop.  But then I have problems with screen glare.  Hmmm…

P.S Windows is the bestest ever.  But if you want to play REAL games, you need to get into DOS.

DOSBox FTW.  Love you Harekiet. <3

#30DaysOfGeek Day 18: Most cringe-worthy geek moment

>_<

Nothing is more cringe-worthy than doing a “/me” on IRC and just typing “me”…  d’oh! ;)

Too short?

How about ummm, losing at games?  Or when Warcraft 3 came out and it took us about 5 months to ever beat the damn AI player when playing co-op?  And even then I can honestly say that we only beat it about 4 times ever.

I’m really at a loss for words on this one.  It takes a lot to make me cringe.  I tend to just piss myself laughing ;)

Cadbury Creme Egg muffins recipe

Creme Egg

Ok, these are going to kick your arse.  Honest. ;)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 75 g soft (room temp) butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar/Splenda or alternative
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 12 mini cadbury creme eggs

Equipment:

  • Usual bowls and mixing things
  • An oven
  • 12-pan muffin tray – for making medium sized muffins
  • Cute Easter themed muffin tray liners

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  2. In a large bowl combine sugar, eggs, melted butter, vanilla essence and milk.
  3. Fold the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder and salt) into the wet mixture.
  4. This makes a dozen, so spoon most of the mixture out into a standard 12-muffin tray, lined with the cutest Easter themed muffin liners you can find. <3 Leave a bit of mixture in the bowl as you need to cover up the Creme Eggs.
  5. Push a Creme Egg into the center of each muffin and cover them up with the left over mixture. This is where you can add a light sprinkling of chocolate chips to the top of the muffins… no?  Go for it, go on! ;)
  6. Bake for approx 15 minutes.

You can tell when a muffin is cooked as it bounces back on top and is slightly golden around the outside. Or you can poke it with a cake-poking-stick (skewer) and they come out clean. Well, maybe not in this case as there are Creme Eggs in the middle…

Happy Easter!

#30DaysOfGeek Day 17: Post a useful HOWTO…

Post a useful HOWTO to solve a challenge you’ve come across recently.

A useful one? Umm. I have NO idea. Maybe there’s a great one here on this blog already I can just link to? ;)

I found this one useful: iTunes doing my head in. But now the problem is happening again, dangit ;) I think it’s because of my LastXP, not because of my iTunes!

I have nothing else to help you, sorry. Post any questions about cooking and I’ll help.
