Oh Christmas tree…

Compared to trees that I saw when I was in the UK, our tree is pretty lame. Yes, it’s not a real one, because real pine trees in NZ look like… sticks with random branches. Our little tiny fake one looks better than any pine tree I’ve ever seen. We don’t have Fir trees, or whatever you foreigners use ;) I don’t like the way my floor gets covered in pine needles too, and needlessly cutting down some innocent baby tree just to have it die in my yard, then having to pay $30 to dump it at the rubbish tip. It doesn’t seem the logical or sustainable thing to do. But I hope one day I can have a really bushy real tree that looks awesome, they need to genetically modify them so they make good Christmas trees. I saw a cool fake black one o_O

Anyway, take a look at our fake tree. The photo doesn’t really do it justice. I’m going to film it at night with the pretty lights flashing and going all colours. I also took the photo before I found a box with tinsel in it ;) So it is a bit bare. We’ve had this tree for about… 10 years o_O So it’s kind of old and worn out. But it’s a good tree, it fits nicely on the table in the corner and we only have a few decorations, all the ones we made as kids are all thrown out long ago. Plus, our cat likes to pull it over so it pays not to have a big tree. Charlotte already nearly pulled the tree over twice. Gotta keep an eye on these kids o_O

Charlotte made her first decoration at this Christmas party she went to, it’s a toilet roll converted into a Santa. He’s sitting up there next to the Angel. Santa is all coloured in with colourful felt pens (which might I add do NOT wash out of her best t-shirt very well). He has a hat with cotton wool on it. He’s very cool looking. She’s not completely sure who Father Christmas/Santa is. I tried to explain it, but all she does is point at say “tee” which is tree in her language.

Our tree looks very nice in person. :p I’m pleased with it. I decorated it ALL on my own. I even themed it so it’s only gold and red. One day I’m going to have a massive tree, and I’ll decorate it only in silver and bloo. Until then, I’m very happy with this one. I’ll post a video of it tonight.

And it already has about 6 presents under it ;) ooooo…..

P.S. stop laughing at my tree, or Santa won’t come to your house!

Because it’s beautiful

The Tea Party: These Living Arms

So a crowd he gathered round us
I’m pining one last kiss
I’m struggling with this lifeline
In the shadow of this bliss
Patience my love Patience my love it’ll all be alright

Ain’t it funny how the fates work
I feel cheated by the turn
Still this love it hovers over us
And the lessons that we’ve learned
Patience my love Patience my love

With your arms around me
You’re singing softly
And I fade from memory
And move on

We were lost inside a wasteland
Of fools groping for the gold
I wonder if they’ll think of us
While they’re still searching for their souls
Patience my love Patience my love

With your arms around me
You’re singing softly
And I fade from memory
And move on
May nothing harm you
I’m still inside you
With my wings around you

So never put it out my love
The spirit is the flame that burns within
Hold on to me
And it’ll all work out fine

Sleep now is descending like a dream
Still I’m shaking from the softness
Of your skin
Hold on to me love
And it’ll all be alright

With your arms around me
You’re singing softly
And I fade from memory
And move on
May nothing harm you
I’m still inside you
With my wings around you

With your arms around me
You’re singing softly
And I fade from memory
And move on
Sweet lover go on Sweet lover go on
My love be strong

Men, pfft!

Wanna know how random men are?

This is the proposed power saving in the new standard desktop environment:

10 minutes – screen saver
15 minutes – hard drive turns off
20 minutes – monitor turns off
30 minutes – system standby
2 hours – hibernation

Bear in mind the screen saver has the company logo and goes on about how we have values such as honest, integrity, doing right by the taxpayer, yadda yadda, propaganda my colleagues say.

Shouldn’t everyone be moving to LCD monitors anyway if we want to be a carbon neutral public service?

We aren’t worried and going to delay the monitor just so people can see the screensaver are we?

Howabout 15 mins the screen goes to sleep? Seems strange to have the harddrive sleep before the screen just because it “might take a while” to come back.

Don’t worry, I’m not trying to be a pain in the arse on purpose, I’m generally quite agreeable. I’m just making sure we have thoroughly questioned everything we do.

Cheers,
Michelle

If you turn away from your PC to read a paper or document it’s amazing how quickly a 10 min screen saver kicks in. Older screens (not flat ones) take a bit of time to warm up again after the mouse wiggle, the screen saver is instantaneous. 20 mins in it is safe to assume the user is probably away from their desk, at a meeting etc.

A good balance would be:-

10 mins screen saver
20 mins power off screen

Those would be my recommendations.

Awesome :)

I guess we need to weigh up what is more important, the screensaver (which people don’t see, because they aren’t at their PC’s anyway) or energy saving.

Cheers,
Michelle

I’ve asked L*** H****** how we should work this setting and the screen saver in together to best effect.

Would you consider 10 minutes too aggressive?

People I have spoken to don’t consider 10 minutes aggressive.

Michelle

How do those settings align with those that are in the paper for the Carbon Reduction Plan?

I suggest that a 5 min screen power off is too aggressive and will annoy. There is scope to re-evaluate and reduce time on all the settings later if required.

Thanks Michelle for your comments.

Gareth – can the G3 meeting this morning it was agreed to adopt Michelle’s recommendation listed. Can this be implemented?

Hi

I think it looked really awesome :)

My only recommendation is that after 5 or 10 minutes the screen turns off and the computer becomes “locked”. The user will have to log in again when they wake the screen. They should lock for security anyway.

There is no difference in response/come-back times between the waking up the screen and coming out of screen saver mode – both just happen at the shake of the mouse.

What you effectively end up with is a black screen saver (the screen is asleep) that doesn’t use as nearly as much power as a real screen saver would (as it doesn’t require the screen to be awake).

Cheers,
Michelle

As you will be aware the Ministry is one of the six core public service agencies that will lead the way in achieving carbon neutrality by the year 2012.

Note: the Ministry is expected to have an approved carbon reduction plan in place by 1 February 2008

Many thanks.

Random as, I need a second opinion that my logic is flawed. Is my logic flawed? Do we need to be carbon neutral by the year 2012 like the Prime Minister said, or do we need to make sure people can see the propaganda screen saver for 10 minutes, even though their screen saver is probably on cos they aren’t at their fecking computer?

Ack, just thinking about gave me a bloody nose bleed! O_O My God, thank god I wore black. I think I finally had my brain explode. Oh God, and I just got my desk cleaned too!

I’ve decided to bow out of the argument. you can’t argue with men, especially ones who see the word “aggressive” and go into a panic and think they might get into trouble (awwwwww) for being aggressive. How else are you going to get change if you don’t make a change?? I tell you John, that stuff on that Herald site last night was so true, we are so anti-change in NZ and its the older people in charge that are making it hard for the young people like us to drive this country forward. (Generally old people are hotties, but not in NZ).

A woman has the last word in any argument.
Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

:D

Whatamorning Part II!

Ohh, back at work! YAY! But I think I might have come back too quickly. I have so much work to do and my brain kind of fizzled thinking about what to do first. I can’t stop sweating, sweating hardcore. Eww, I’m all sticky -_- and I’m sweating body spray, so it smells nice, but I feel so yuck.

I’m kind of hungry too. I haven’t eaten in a while. I don’t think I’ll risk it until tomorrow or maybe the weekend.

But I’m feeling a lot better than I did :) This is a great thing yes!

I had the most bizarre dream last night. I dreamt that was in a duathlon and it had a 10km bike ride followed by a double marathon! Kinda freaky. ;) I do my next duathlon in April 2008. I don’t remember thinking about it though, because I was way too sick to think about it! There better not be a double marathon in it! (Don’t worry, there isn’t). I don’t do triathlons because I’m scared of the ocean and they always want to do them in the sea! >_<

Wow, I did some work for the ladies upstairs this morning and they bought me a coffee to my desk. Yummy, its all frothy and coffee-ish. How do I break it to them I don’t drink coffee or I go crazy and try and climb the walls? *drinks the coffee* I am polite and drink what I’m given. Wow, at least I’ll never sleep again ;) Stomach seems to be okay with it! I also chewed a bit of my cherry flavoured lip balm, because it smells way too good to be true… it was o_O

Right, well, now I’ve bored myself shitless I’m off to a govt3 meeting to rant on about sustainability and doing right by the environment. And here’s hoping we can win some more awards ;) Oh, and vote for Al Gore.

Feeling craaaappy

So I’m curled up in bed and someone keeps calling my house. Stop waking me -_-

I’m so tired, and I keep vomiting on the floor cos when I’m asleep I can’t move fast enough. And the bowl keeps… being far away. Who put that there?

Oh, I’m a bad patient when I’m ill. *moans and groans*

But, I’m eating some Marmite on toast (thanks deepcut) and feeling a bit better. So maybe one more nap after this and then I’ll be able to watch Enchanted. Yay it finally downloaded.

I think the only thing really hurting me today is that I didn’t get to go to work. And that Charlotte will be staying over at my aunties house tonight. I didn’t get to touch Charlie or go near her when I started getting sick. And she was crying out for me when she went to bed. And I won’t see her until after work tomorrow. So I do miss her. I think I’ll call her tonight and we can talk on the phone. Wanted to give my baby cuddles, but she was all well, and I don’t want her sick.

This movie Pulse is on TV and it’s really scary, why did I start watching it :(

GnoooOO000000OOoooooo

If you EVER see Maybelline Wet Shine Diamonds number 400 (which is Pink Carats) you buy it by the crate and send it to me and I’ll give you $20 for each one.

I just realised I only have less than 1cm left of my lipstick, and its gonna run out and I’m gonna be sad. It’s the bestest lipstick ever. All shiny and glossy with sparkles, and just perfectly suited. Not too bright, not too dull, perfect.

Ohhh damn me for loving a lipstick not available in NZ anymore!

A stinking hot weekend!

Oh what a weekend. I can’t say that I did a lot, I totally didn’t. Well, I went to a BBQ at the police station. That was awesome. I took a shitload of photos. Charlotte had lots of fun with the kids and was pleased to see Kirsty again. And for once I wasn’t behind the camera, because there are photos of me!

Hmmm, I need to start captioning the photos. And how come nobody comments ;) You can comment on my photos!

Yesterday was great, I just made this bed on my lawn and lay in the sun. I think my legs are feeling a bit itchy, so I got some sun. It was so nice to be in the sun and just.. hot. HOT. Today is supposed to be the hottest so far this year, 21 degree high. But for some reason it’s all overcast and windy and it started raining on the way to work. Go figure *rolls eyes*

Also spend some time looking for more bands. My last.fm page is great because it doesn’t just show what I listen to ;) but makes some AWESOME recommendations for bands I’d like. And I’ve found some awesome ones. Strange enough, it picked up Starfighter, which is a rare one I own on CD. And a few others, remind me to rip my CD’s into mp3. So I did a fair bit of that while sitting in the sun too. Which explains why my battery ran out so fast. Also, a bit of EE3 ;) OOSH.

Here’s a photo I took when mountain biking up in Upper Hutt. So I did get off my arse:

I also spent time with some awesome people on IRC. You know who you are. And thanks :) I’m uhh, well, yeah. And yes, I woke up this morning like this –> O_O

So, I noticed we’re into December. Where did this year go? It seems to have flown past me. Hard to believe I have been at MED for over a year now. And so much has changed since I started here. I can’t say that I miss the Ministry of Education :p

Also at home, things have been interesting this year. Very interesting. I wonder WTF I’m doing there too. Random.

So we’ll wait out December, and wait for the new year. Which will bring a change I hope. Bring on 08, every day which passes takes me closer to something else. I just hope that something else is awesomer than this.

Oh, I forgot my medication today. Bugger. And I have a two hour meeting this morning. This is gonna be interesting… >_< I wish I didn’t live on the other side of the harbour. So ignore me if I’m acting like a dick.
